Dear Parents/Guardians of Waugh Preschool Students,

It is with great sadness that I share with you that the Waugh School District will no longer be operating a preschool on the Meadow campus. This was a very difficult decision that was reached by our school board earlier this week. This decision has nothing to do with the quality of our preschool program. We know that our incredible staff has developed and operated a model program for over a decade. We also recognize that many students and families have benefited from acquiring strong pre-academic skills in such a nurturing environment.

The Board provided guidance to end the operation of the preschool strictly for financial reasons.  The extended COVID-19 closure exposed deep fiscal vulnerabilities within the program. In order to continue operating the preschool, the Waugh School District would have no other option but to draw down funds intended for our elementary school-aged students. The school board has long held the position that the preschool could operate only if it was self-sustaining.

We are also deeply saddened that the closure of our preschool resulted in the layoff of 6 valued staff members. The Waugh School District is doing everything possible to support them through this challenging time.

The school board has provided me with direction to seek out a partnership with either a nonprofit or private organization capable of operating a preschool program that meets Waugh’s high standards for educational programming. We are working diligently to identify such a partner, and we will keep you informed of our progress. In the meantime, it is recommended that you investigate alternative options for your child.

Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or concerns.
